It's 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, Do You Know Where Your Facebook Page Is? PDF Print E-mail

In the mid-80s, Friday nights meant two things for this Indiana girl: basketball games and waiting breathlessly until midnight to dance around my living room with Janet Jackson.

Those of you who lived within the reaches of cable TV got your daily supply of music videos on MTV. But I had to wait until the clock struck midnight and "Friday Night Videos," came on for a full 90 minutes. It was my connection to a much cooler world out there, where boys wore pink and spontaneous group dances started in the streets.

I'll be back in Friday night countdown mode tonight to stake another claim to my identity and any florist who wants to secure their brand online should join me. At 12:01 a.m. EDT on Saturday, June 13, Facebook will allow its users to choose a username on a first-come, first-serve basis for their profile and the Facebook pages that they administer by visiting www.facebook.com/username/.

If your business page doesn't have 1,000 fans, you won't be able to secure a username until June 28. If you have a trademark, you can request that Facebook put it on a restricted list by filling out this form.

Why should you stay up late to grab a username? Do you want customers — like that bride who just took a billion photos of your work —to find your shop easily online, become a fan and share those photos? Do you want to be able to fit your Facebook URL in one line of copy? Do you want a better handle on your brand or trademark?

If not, sweet dreams. If you're not worried about there being too many other Today's Bouquets, Petal and Vines or Little Shop of Flowers on Facebook taking your name, then wait until after that wedding tomorrow or even Monday to create a new name.

But if you've got the perfect moniker picked and want to grab it tonight, take a swig of your favorite caffeinated beverage and bookmark this page. You'll be replacing the string of numbers at the end of your current Facebook page address with usernames. For example, SAF's URL looks like this:

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/pages/Society-of-American-Florists/106533866576?ref=ts

After June 28 (or sooner, if we get 1,000 fans -- hint  hint) it will look like this:  www.facebook.com/username

Early squatters already secured tens of thousands of business names on the restricted list, which also includes obscenities that Facebook doesn't want used.

I'll be online tonight (whilst dancing around the living room), and may just grab a totally cool username for a "Friday Night Videos" fan club page.
